How to File an FBN Statement in San Luis Obispo County

San Luis Obispo County fictitious business name statements are filed with the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder. Here are the steps, with links to the county's official pages.

  1. Search the name. Use the county's official FBN name search to check whether the name is already on file.
  2. Complete the statement. Follow the San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's FBN instructions, listing every business name and every registrant. In person, you sign the application electronically at the counter and show valid identification. A filing made by someone other than the registrant needs the original statement signed by the registrant. The county uses one form for new filings and renewals.
  3. File and pay the county fee. The county charges $73 (the clerk's fee, which can change — check the county page before filing) for one business name and one registrant. Additional business names, and registrants beyond the first two, are $10 each. Card payments add a $1.49 processing fee.
    • In person: Clerk-Recorder, 1055 Monterey Street, Suite D120, San Luis Obispo, CA 93408
    • By mail: the same address, with the completed form and the fee
    • Online: the self-service portal starts a filing, but the registrant must finish it in person within 30 days
  4. Keep your stamped copy. The clerk stamps it with a file number and filing date. That date starts your 45-day publication clock.
