Does My FBN Renewal Need Republication?
Renewing a California fictitious business name? Answer three questions to see whether your refiling has to be published again. If not, we can send you a free reminder about two months before your next renewal is due.
Do I Need to Republish My DBA When I Renew It in California?
Not always. Under Business and Professions Code §17917(c), a renewal with no changes doesn't need publication — as long as it's refiled by the expiration date or within 40 days after. If anything changed, or you refile later than that, the new statement must be published once a week for four weeks, starting within 45 days of filing.
When Does a California FBN Statement Expire?
Five years from the date it was filed, under Business and Professions Code §17920(a). It can expire sooner if facts on the statement change (other than an individual registrant's residence address) or if you file a statement of abandonment.
What Counts as a Change?
Any change in the information on the statement, such as a new business address, a new or removed owner, or a different business structure. A changed statement is treated as a new filing and must be published. A change in an individual registrant's home address alone does not make the statement expire early.
